Kevin attended art classes at Immaculate Heart of Mary grade school this past school year...and it wasn't always easy for him. In the fall we started with the eighth grade class but found their art projects difficult to adapt for Kevin. After Christmas break we switched to the third grade art class. Kevin loved the welcoming Principal and Art Teacher. The students were very friendly and made us feel so welcome...but there were times when Kevin didn't want to be there and he would get upset. The Principal and Art Teacher were very supportive to make this work for Kevin. My guess is Kevin would do better without me (the mom) present but he needs one on one help doing the art projects.
At the end of the school year the Principal asked if we could attend their end of the year Award Ceremony. The church was full of teachers, students, and their proud parents. After attending the school Mass, the ceremony lasted a full hour and about 20 minutes to the end Kevin was done and wanted to leave. I'm so glad he kept himself in check because I would have missed one of the best moments ever. The Principal began speaking to introduce the last award and Kevin became very quiet and began listening intently to her...this was before she even said his name. I wish I could remember everything she said but it's hard to remember when you have love tears in your eyes. Kevin received a standing ovation and it was a long walk to the front from the last pew and I wasn't sure Kevin would make it up there if I didn't prod him along. I am so appreciative to the Principal for being so kind and recognizing Kevin's growth this year. I'm a proud mama too!
Here's a video that a friend shared with me.
